In the 19th century, South Carolina’s Sea Islands grew a class of tiny early cowpeas with fresh mineral and field aromas. Known as “Petit Rouge” due to their association with Sea Island Huguenot farmers, these cold-tolerant peas were planted first in early spring and supplied fresh tiny green cowpeas for the classic Sea Island spring rice and cowpea dish, reezy peezy. We find similar influences in Italian risi e bisi and African Gold Coast rice culture.
